Calasetta
Population: 2,700
In 1738, Carlo Emanuele III King of Sardinia gave his formal consent
for a numerous group of inhabitants of Tabarka, with Ligurian origins,
to move to the Island
of S.Pietro.
Later, part of this group moved to the Island of S.Antioco, which was
almost uninhabited, where they founded the town of Calasetta. More than
two centuries after its foundation, and despite of the ever-increasing
exchanges and contact with Sardinian people, the inhabitants of Calasetta
have preserved their Ligurian dialect and traditions.
The town's economy is essentially based on tourism, fishing and agriculture
(the particularly sandy terrain favours the cultivation of vines and
the area is, above all, noted for the fine wine made from the Carignano
grape, grown throughout the Sulcis district).
The Island of S. Pietro can be reached by ferry from the small harbour.
In the historic centre visitors can admire the parish church of S.Maurizio
and the Town Hall, whilst a stroll up to the highest point in the town
takes you to the Spanish Tower, dating back to the XVII century.
The road that winds up to the tower continues towards a large beach
called "Sotto La Torre" (Below the Tower). Further on there
is the Spiaggia delle Saline, and finally the splendid beach of "Nido
dei Passeri".
