Santadi

Population: 3,906

The Santadi district abounds in traces of human settlements dating back to Phoenician-Punic times, such as the fortress of Pani Loriga.
This site consists of an acropolis with dwellings and a necropolis with a tophet and a shrine. There are about 150 tombs in total and the fortress dates back to around the VII century B.C.

Visitors must not miss the beautiful grottoes of Is Zuddas, vast caves formed in the limestone of Monte Meana, 236 m. above sea level.
These caves are of great speleologic interest because of the incredible concretions
to be seen there.
In the first chamber visitors can admire the marvellous stalactites and stalagmites, forming impressive columns, a natural passage then leads into the so-called 'organ room', which gets its name from the column formation resembling organ pipes.

Every year in June Santadi celebrates the Matrimonio Mauritanio, a religious wedding which is carried out according to ancient pastoral and farming traditions.
The bride and groom wear the original local costumes of the times and arrive at the church on magnificently decorated ox-drawn carts.
Another unforgettable experience for visitors to the area is a trip to the wine cellar of the Santadi Winegrowers' Association.
