Villacidro
Population: 15,000
Surface area: 183.55 sq. km
Altitude: 267m. above sea level
Villacidro is a picturesque village which rises up from the slopes
of Monte Linas.
In the centre of the village visitors can admire the majestic Town Hall,
which was recently completely restored, as well as churches and the
old Wash-house in beautiful Liberty style.
Originally
Villacidro was made up of two separate villages: the oldest one stretching
across the hilly area, while the more recent urban district lies on
the flat areas. Up until the middle of the last century Villacidro was
known throughout the Province of Cagliari as a coal miners' village.
However, mining was complementary to the other main activity of the
area, that of woodcutting.
The mountainous region of Villacidro is characterised by large woods,
wild mountain ranges and numerous springs which generate bubbling streams
and waterfalls, especially in the autumn and winter months.
Villacidro is therefore a paradise for trekking enthusiasts and boasts
extraordinary itineraries. Visitors should not miss the
Sa Spendula and Muru Mannu waterfalls.
- Sa Spendula, meaning 'waterfall' in the
local dialect, became famous throughout Italy thanks to G. D'Annunzio,
who dedicated one of his poems to this natural beauty after a visit
to the region in 1882.
- The Muru Mannu waterfall can be found
at the mouth of the river Rio Mannu, which runs along the foothills
of the impressive Monte Linas. This magnificent waterfall is 70 metres
high and is therefore the biggest in Sardinia.
