of Gioiosa Guardia and the area known as S'Ortu Mannu.
The town of Villamassargia is the ideal starting point for numerous
fascinating itineraries, which unveil the treasures of the Sulcis district.
The
Church of La Vergine del Pilar
The church stands in the centre of the town and is a fine example of
Tuscan-Romanesque style in Sardinia. It is also one of the few churches
on the island which can be traced to a particular builder. In fact,
the church bears an inscription of the year in which it was built (1330)
and the name of the artist (Arzoco di Garnax).
The facade is divided into three parts by fine pilasters and above the
portal there is an exquisitely designed lobed Rose Window.
S'Ortu Mannu
Between 1300 and 1600 the Pisans planted a vast olive grove, "S'Ortu
Mannu", at the foot of the Castle of Gioiosa Guardia. Some of these
olive trees still exist today,
their weathered trunks bearing testimony to their secular life.
